I I I I 1 1 1 1 1 1 THE PLAIN DEALER, OCTOBER 29, 1977 RI Entertainment Maazel's masterful Mozart 24 Music critic An, all-Mozart program by a symphony or by. any musical group numbering from one to 300, for that matter starts off with an ironclad guarantee of quality in the musical merchandise. The all-Mozart concert offered by the Cleveland. Orchestra, conductor Lorin Maazel and pianist" Peter Frankl in Severance Hall, Thursday night, however, went well beyond even that. 2 It had genuine historical interest (due mainly to the performance of a symphony written by at age nine), but more important, it was a joyful musical occasion.

The performances had a technical polish combined with a lordly elegance that beautifully suited the two. major works offered. A These major pieces were both from Mozart's lode of grandiose, large-scale brilliance: the I major piano concerto with Frankl) and the flat symphony, no. 39. Maazel used an appropriately small orchestra the nine-year old Mozart's Symphony no.

4 (K. 19), and a rather larger crew for the two later masterworks. The program receives its final performance By Robert Finn tonight. The partnership of Frankl and Maazel in steps in for entertainment By Wilma Salisbury made its area debut Thursday night at Lake Erie College. Yet, the nine-member West Coast company had a familiar look.

of the dancers, Keith Marshall, had appeared here previously with Margalit Dance The company's chief choreographer, Spider Kedelsky, had been represented on performances by Repertory Dance of Cleveland and the Bill Evans Dance Compy. The program's fi'male, Evans' "Juke Box," had been performed here by the Evans company and Repertory Dance of Utah. The choreography, too, lacked distinctiveness, though some of it was well-crafted, and all of it was danced with spirit and togetherness. young Los Angeles troupe has no artistic or resident choreographer. Kedelsky, its most gifted creative talent, is one of the company's two general managers.

The dancers showed two Kedelsky ballets: a humorous company work that borrowed movement ideas from the birds and the beasts, and a series of three pure dances set to recorded music by Vivaldi." In both works, the choreographer showed a sure instinct for space and structure. His phrasing was musical. His textures were inventive and his designs assymetrical. Outstanding in the performances were Anthony Rabara as the leader of the herd and Susan Blankenship and Madeleine Scott as two friends with three chairs. company choreographers presenting were Margaret Schuette, who danced her solo, "Sketches," and Mary Jane Eisenberg, "offered a theater piece, "Close to Home." Ms.

Schuette's two-part study consisted of a busy, sharply-accented exercise, followed by a soft "breath" dance. Ms. Eisenberg's piece, a movement portrait of people in a park, was said to be inspired by the photographs of Diane Arbus. Unfortunately, the photos did not inspire the choreographer to any dancing. Nonetheless, the mimting of an adolescent flirtation, elderly companionship, basketball free-for-all and other everyday park scenes amused the audience in Rickel The funniest.

dance of the evening was "Juke Box, Evans' affectionate tribute to the 1940s. impressed as a virtuoso violinist who loves the sound of his instrument and thoroughly enjoys its intrinsic qualities. Performing the popular Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, Op. 64, he produced a rich tone that he expressively shaped and shaded to fit the contours of the music. His phrasing suggested that of a sensitive singer. Leaning on accents, allowing important pitches to blossom and rounding off cadences, he used his bow as though it were his breath.

Because tempos in the first two movements were slightly on the slow side, Yaron's interpretation seemed somewhat cautious. However, he effectively captured the playful nature of the finale, and overall, gave a performance of musical maturity far beyond his 24 years. Leading the orchestra in well-bal- -AMUsem*nTSNORTHEASTERN OHIO'S ONLY "LIVE" BURLESK NOW THRU SUN. GINGER -AMUsem*nTSNORTHEASTERN the concerto was splendid. Frankl played with crisp grandeur, keeping the rhythm firm and participating on equal terms in the piano-orchestra dialogue that is the glory of Mozart's piano concertos, yet managing to inflect many phrase with warmth and expressiveness.

Technically he was in top form. Maazel supplied a firmly-shaped accompaniment, conveying but not overstressing this concerto's pompous, quasi military side. The orchestra played with a clarity of texture and elegance of phrasing that gave the music transparency despite its often hearty, extroverted nature. The one thing lacking to make this one of the finest concerto performances heard at Severance in recent years was some attention to the soft dynamic level Mozart specified for the 3 slow movement on the part of both conductor and soloist. The great flat symphony shares some of the major concerto's qualities of outgoing brilliance.

Maazel was thoroughly at home with it on Thursday night. The performance had warm, wellblended sound, fine solo work by the wind players and a sense of Mozartean shape and proportion that was never allowed to go slack. Maazel allowed the music to flow naturally, without seeking to impose himself between Mozart and his audience. The orchestral response was technically on a very high plane. As for the nine-year-old Mozart's little curtain-raising symphony, hearing it confronts one all over again with the mystery of Mozart.

Here is a perfectly shaped, elegant little three-movement piece, not profound or powerful, to be sure, yet gracious and beautiful in its own way and fashioned by a lad of nine! It makes one tremble to contemplate such a phenomenon. The piece, expertly delivered on Thursday by Maazel and his players, is so winsome, so neatly finished, wrought with such assurance! As a noted American statesman once said in another context, it converts vanity to prayer. -AMUsem*nTSPALACE THEATRE the HEART of PLAYHOUSE SQUARE MEL TORME IN AN ALL NEW SHOW, AND BUDDY RICH HIS KILLER FORCE Tonite thru Sun. Both these compositions are so thoroughly in the blood of the orchestra that a conductor who sets appropriate tempos, indicates attacks clearly and lets the music flow is likely to come up with a fairly elegant performance.

Jean's baton was not quite sharp enough to command the precision and clarity of which the players are capable, and his rhythms tended to be rather rigid in fast movements.
