The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

BE THE PLAIN DEALER, MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1977 Attendance seesaws 3 Bard's festival: Feast or famine By Bill Doll underground debate at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival whether the "Shakespeare" should be dropped from the name won't be settled by this past season's attendance figures. It was a season of new highs, some declines, and the Bard doing both worse and better than last year. Attendance overall was up over last year at the their Lakewood Civic Auditorium home (41,766 compared to 38.210. excluding student and touring performances). The show with the best draw was "Peg O' My Heart," the turn-of-the century comedy of a sprightly IrishAmcrican lass who warms the stuffy co*ckles of a British family.

"Peg" "drew 18,133 people, filling of theater's 989 seats. "Peg" did almost better than the best show of last season, "Ah, Wilderness." "Peg" also did almost da third better than this season's second most popular production, Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." Over 7,000 came for that. amounting 1o, an average of capacity. But along with these improvements, a number of the six shows did worse than last year's attractions. Last year the average capacity ranged from to of the seats filled.

This year, the range went from "Peg's" high of to the less than a third of capacity that "The Glass and "In a Fine Frenzy" pulled Menagerie" was seen by 3,945 people, for an average capacity of With "Frenzy," the figures are 3,122 spectators. The season's sixth play, "'The Importance of Being Oscar," was seen by 3,101, which averages out to of a full house for each of its six performances. Three shows this season had an average capacity of less than "Menagerie," "Frenzy," and "Hamlet." Last season, while no show went above only one went below Last year's two Shakespeare attractions, "The Tempest" and "Romeo and Juliet" each filled almost half the house on the average. This. season's "Hamlet" managed about a third of the seats and "Shrew" somewhat more than half Thus, "Hamlet" didn't do as well as either Shakespeare production last year, while "Shrew" did decidedly better In short.

mixed notices. The show that did well, "Peg," did very well. It helped carry some of the others. One Shakespeare did better than either of the Bard's did last season. But the balance of the season fared not as well last season's fare.

Buzzi, Johnston will be reunited Ruth Buzzi and Arte Johnson are reunited in "Once Upon a Brothers Grimm," also starring Dean Jones Paul Stefanie Zimbalist and Michael Sharrett will play the grandchildren of James Stewart in "Lassie, My Lassie" Entertainment Play has last laugh ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) A racy sex comedy written 306 years ago by a young English woman playwright has been published for the first time ever by the Cornell University press. The original manuscript of Elizabeth Polwhele's stage play, "'The Frolicks," was discovered in 1974 in Cornell University's rare book collection, officials of the Ivy League school reported. The manuscript had been missing for more than 80 years. The play is believed to be the first comedy written by a woman for professional production in England, although there is no evidence the play was ever produced.

Little is known about Elizabeth Polwhele, except that she authored another play, "'The Faithful Virgins," which was evidently produced. The book published by Cornell, entitled, "The Frolicks," was edited by Robert D. Hume of Pennsylvania State University and Judith Milhouse of the University of Iowa.
