What's new for the 2023 Porsche Taycan?

All Taycans adopt the front-axle disconnect system introduced with last year’s GTS models. Additionally, Porsche tweaked some behind-the-scenes tech to make these cars more efficient. The car’s EPA-estimated electric range rises accordingly, now stretching from just over 200 miles to 246 in the GTS. (If you happen to have bought a 2022, a dealer-installed update can bring them into line, too.)

The Taycan family is sized about like a BMW 5-Series, though it’s nowhere near as spacious inside. All models share fang-like LED headlights up front. Sport Turismo models have a long roof that improves cargo hauling, at least a little bit, while Cross Turismo models have slightly chunkier looks. Inside, the cabin is clean and sleek, if not exactly luxurious until you start piling on extended leather upholstery and special trim finishes.

Most versions are all-wheel drive, with power outputs climbing from 402 hp to a staggering 750 hp. At 5.1 seconds to 60 mph in base form, the entry-level Taycan is plenty peppy. The curiously named Turbo S at the top of the lineup boasts no turbocharger but can still zip to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds. You certainly spent more time reading this paragraph.

Electric-car handling is currently at its peak in the Taycan, which has grip for days paired with a supple ride even without optional adaptive dampers.

It may look big, but the Taycan is a 2+2 choice with limited cargo space. It’s not particularly practical.

Crash tests haven’t been performed by either the NHTSA or the IIHS. In typical Porsche fashion, most driver-assistance features are optional.

How much does the 2023 Porsche Taycan cost?

The base Taycan sedan runs just south of $90,000. Stepping up to the 4S brings a second motor that translates to all-wheel traction and considerably more power for $108,000. With leather seats, smartphone projection, and 19-inch wheels, no Taycan is basic. We’d spend for uprated chargers and a mobile charger connector, plus maybe splurge on fancier paint and trim.

Is the Porsche Taycan a good-looking car?

It’s very pretty, with its Panamera-like proportions and 911-grade details. Even in sampling its siblings, the Taycan charts a new course overall. Its low-slung hood gives the driver a 911-like perspective, though passers-by will notice its complex headlights don’t follow Porsche’s ovoid norm.

The Gran Turismo body brings a longer roofline for a wagon-like appearance. Cross Turismos look a little busier with their contrasting fender flares, though that’s about as far as the Subaru Outback treatment goes here.

Inside, the Taycan goes more subdued. It’s almost like a selling point for brighter upholstery and fancier trims—which, of course, cost big bucks.

The 2023 Taycan’s interior and exterior each earn two points above average, for a 9 out of 10 overall.

Like a slot car for pavement, the Porsche Taycan boasts impeccable grip and thrilling acceleration.

Don’t look to the Porsche Taycan for its electric range. Consider this lineup for its blistering acceleration and spectacular handling. It’s one of the most fun-to-drive cars ever built, easily earning our top score.

Is the Porsche Taycan 4WD?

Base models have a single electric motor teamed with a 2-speed automatic transmission, but other models add a second motor and a single-speed gearbox to effectively give them all-wheel drive. Cross Turismos may look sort of rugged, but they’re not meant for off-roading.

How fast is the Porsche Taycan?

Porsche offers two different battery packs: a standard 79.2-kwh setup and a “Plus” pack rated at 93.4 kwh. Even the base, single-motor Taycan zips to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, which is quite impressive for a car that tips the scales at 4,600 pounds.

Things get markedly faster from there when the second motor arrives. In 4S form, look for 522 hp and a 3.8-second 0-60 mph run. The GTS pushes output to 590 hp and slices 0.3 seconds off of its 60 mph sprint.

Turbo models don’t have turbochargers. They have an overboost mode that delivers 670 hp. The Turbo S is the top dog with 750 hp rushing to all four corners, forcing the tires to scramble their way to 60 mph in an unreal 2.6 seconds. It’s hard to imagine a faster car.

All that go is matched with impeccable poise. These heavy cars mush the road below (and do an even better job with available air springs), all while clinging to pavement with uncanny stickiness. All models stop quickly, too, though the carbon ceramic brakes on the Turbo S deliver true supercar-grade braking.

2023 Porsche Taycan Comfort & Quality

The 2023 Porsche Taycan is best appreciated from the front seats.

Call “Shotgun!” if you’re given the opportunity to ride in a Porsche Taycan. The front seats are terrific, and the cabin is beautifully wrought. Those assets ring up a 7 out of 10.

Standard 14-way power-adjustable front seats can be upgraded to grippier 18-way seats. All models have leather, but the hides get softer and brighter the higher the spend.

Row two has room for two in sedans (and theoretically three with the optional middle seat for the rear row), but anyone over about six feet tall will be unhappy. It’s better than a coupe, but only just so.

The front trunk offers less than 3 cubic feet of storage space primarily for charging gear. Cargo space at the rear is similarly unimpressive at just 12.9 cubic feet. The Sport Turismo offers up 15.8 cubes, which can grow to a more impressive 42.8 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks down.

How safe is the Porsche Taycan?

It hasn’t been crashed by either the NHTSA or the IIHS, so we can’t say for certain.

Standard fare is stingy: automatic emergency braking is augmented by parking sensors and active lane control. Porsche wants more for adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and night-vision cameras, all of which can come in handy given so-so outward vision.

2023 Porsche Taycan Features

Porsche packs a lot of features into the 2023 Taycan—and many more await on its options list.

The 2023 Porsche Taycan scores an 8 for features on account of decent standard fare, stunning options, and impressive infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

A 4-year/50,000-mile warranty is included.

Base cars run $88,150, and they include a 10.9-inch touchscreen for infotainment, an 8.4-inch touchscreen that handles climate controls, and a big 16.8-inch digital instrument cluster. They also come with a 9.6-kw onboard AC charger, which we’d recommend upgrading to the $1,680 19.2-kw charger. While you’re there, select the $460 150-kw DC charger, too, for public chargers.

Which Porsche Taycan should I buy?

Eh, that depends on what you’ve got to spend. We like the Turismo body and the GTS trim level, which includes the second motor and upsized battery, plus a few more features such as a panoramic roof and unique interior trim. Figure $135,000 to start, plus keep room in your budget for uprated interior trim, adaptive cruise control, and a few other niceties.

How much is a fully loaded Porsche Taycan?

The Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo costs $191,000 or so to start, but it’s easy to crest $200,000 with just a few options. Those costly extras range the gamut, from useful adaptive cruise control and head-up display to $1,180 worth of door graphics and $1,470 deep-pile floor mats with embroidered logos. We easily clicked our way to a $230,000 Taycan on Porsche’s configurator.

Is the Porsche Taycan good on gas?

A number of big changes behind the scenes help Porsche squeeze more range out of the Taycan’s batteries this year. Additionally, most models can disconnect the front axle to improve range even more. Still, its efficiency lags some other EVs, so it’s a 9 here.

Now, the base Taycan’s EPA estimate grows to 208 miles on a full battery. The optional Performance Battery Plus boosts that to 242 miles, though GTS models nudge out another four miles of range.

Those incremental changes help, but the Taycan pales against the 400-plus range in the Tesla Model S and the astounding 512-mile range in a Lucid Air.

The optional 19.2-kwh charger can help juice up the Taycan exceptionally quicker, especially at CCS-compatible fast chargers such as those built by Porsche parent VW’s Electrify America operations.
